Be Present - Book Note of *The Passionate Programmer*
This was my second time to read this book. You cannot imagine how shock I was when I first read this book on Kindle. So I again bought a hardcopy and want to read it again.
The topic about “present” was the first chapter I read the second pass. It so fit to my current circumstance. In Marvell, I have 2 bosses. One is in BJ, while the other is in SC. I work and have lunch with the first boss every day, but get job assignment and directive from the second boss. Because of the distance, I kind of feel be ignored. And it took almost 2 years to stablish my reputation in the HQ team. Now, after 2 years on board, I’m finally recognized as the power design expertise, and people always consult with me about power issues. My experience were:
- Be active. To attend more video conferences and speak up when you have any opinions. Especially when you are the presenter, prepare as much as you can even it means you have to write down word by word beforehand. Presentations are the best ways to be recognized, especially a successful one.
- Be helpful and ask for help. People intend to remember someone better when he asked for their help. And please do something for the others to return the favors.
- Be patient. It takes time to be recognized. So please be patient.
Actually this note is not about how to be “present”, it’s really about how to be recognized and remembered.
